The Backyard Ultra is an extreme form of long-distance running over an unlimited number of laps, with each lap measuring 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometers), and the runners have exactly one hour to complete a lap. The goal is not to achieve the fastest time, but to demonstrate endurance and not give up. This crazy running format, invented by Gary Cantrell, known as Lazarus Lake, allows participants to test their own limits in good company and even host the event in their own backyard. The ultimate winner is the one who lasts the longest – Last Wo(man) Standing.
Highlights
- The length of the lap is chosen so that 100 miles can be covered in 24 hours, which corresponds to an average pace of 8 minutes and 56.8 seconds per kilometer.
- The original Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra takes place every two years in October in Tennessee, USA, and is very popular in the ultrarunning scene.
- It's not the fastest runners who win, but those who can enjoy the event the longest; everyone else gets a DNF!
